The Independent Highway District in Sandpoint, ID is responsible for year-round maintenance on 8.8 miles of Schweitzer Mountain Road, which is the only access to the biggest ski resort in Idaho and exists within the City of Sandpoint’s environmentally sensitive watershed. Most of the highway district’s funding is spent on winter maintenance. A 2018 engineering audit found that approximately 63 percent of the roadway needed overlay work and reconstruction to extend the life of the road and provide a safer maintainable surface. Century West helped the Independent Highway District to identify potential funding opportunities and apply for the much-needed funding. By the end of January 2019, Century West had helped the Independent Highway District secure over $2,000,000 in funding through the Idaho Office of Emergency Management and the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council. Century West prepared the construction plans and bid documents for roadway improvements that included portions of roadway reconstruction, grinding and resurfacing, and pavement overlays. By the end of the 2019 construction season, over 6 miles of Schweitzer Mountain Road were resurfaced with new asphalt. The projects were closed out ahead of schedule, and the District has a roadway that they can continue to maintain within their available maintenance budget.
